Quad server solution for high-performance applications

4RU solution from Meinerzhagen

3. February 2021

As part of a research project funded by the BMBF, we succeeded in developing a quad server solution based on the COM Express standard Type 7. The server-based 19-inch/4 RU solution enables users to operate particularly high-performance applications with a high packing density.Possible markets for this application include telecommunications, Industry 4.0 or IT security.

The quad server is based on four COM-Express modules, which are equipped with an INTEL® AtomTM C3808 and are passively cooled by heatspreaders and heatpipes. This means that 48 server cores with up to 128 GB DDR4 memory can be operated in a very small space.

In addition to the 12 x 10 Gbit interfaces, which directly connect all 4 CPU modules to another, without using an additional Ethernet switch, the Quad server has the following interfaces:

  • 8 x network interfaces,

    • 4x 10 Gbit interface directly connected to one CPU module , SFP+

    • 4x 10/100/1000 Mbit interface directly connected to one CPU module, RJ45

  • 4 x USB 3.0 interface, connected to one CPU module, USB type A

  • 4 x VGA display output, connected to one CPU module, D-SUB 15pol.

  • 4 x hard disk slots 2,5“, connected to one CPU module via PCIe x4, assembled with Samsung 960GB NVMe

  • 4 x status LED

  • 4 x reset button

The hardware application runs on a Debian Linux 10.3.0 (MATE), which should offer the user a familiar development environment.
